A beautiful  hybrid with large yellow woolly areoles
 

Description: The superb feature of some of this hybrids is due to the intersection between the traits of the ancestors and make  them very desirable. Ribs are sharp (usually eight)  and have short spines clearly indicating the relationship with  A. senilis var. aureum. The main characteristic of this hybrids are the yellow woolly areoles, as the plants age the areoles become more and more large, woolly and colourful. The older specimens are often very handsome. This hybrids are strong but slow growing. The flower are also very beautiful.
Remarks: Compare with the inverse hybrid SEN(AU)-AS  which is similar but with (usually) longer spines.

Scientific name: Astrophytum hybrid AS-SEN(AU)

Plants obtained by controlled pollination of     ♀Astrophytum asterias
x ♂Astrophytum senilis aureum

Origin:  Garden origin (Nursery produced cultivar)

Conservation status: Listed in CITES appendix 2.

Cultivation: Although regarded as a choice and difficult plant in cultivation it is relatively easy to grow. It is sometime seen as a grafted plant but grows very well on its own roots too. Use mineral well permeable substratum with little organic matter (peat, humus). Water sparingly from March till October and keep perfectly dry in winter at temperatures from 5 to 15 degrees centigrade. (but it is Hardy to -7°C for short periods) In the rest period no high atmospheric humidity!! Sun Exposure: Light shade to full sun.

Propagation: They can be propagated easily from seed or graft.
