Dictionary of botanic terminology - index of names

     
  Type is a term used alone, or forming part of a compound term to indicate a particular taxonomic group, especially a genus or species, chosen as the representative example in characterizing the larger taxonomic group to which it belongs.  

Each taxon has, actually or potentially, a type.
The type of a nominal species is a specimen (type specimen or holotype)
The type of a nominal genus is the nominal species (type species or generitype)
The type of a nominal family is the nominal genus (type genus).
