  A microscopic opening in the surface of a leaf that allows gases to pass in and out  
     
A stoma (plural: stomata) is a natural microscopically small opening or specialised pore in the epidermis of the green part of a plant. It allow water, oxygen, and carbon dioxide to pass into and out of a plant and has the ability to open and close in response to environmental conditions. The stoma comprises the pore in the epidermis along with the two guard cells surrounding it. Sometimes applied only to the pore.
